As many of us already know, the issue of software patents is currently being addressed by industry and the patent office. The following links provide a guide to aid in understanding the issues associated with software patents. The League for Programming Freedom ( http://www.lpf.org/Patents/industry-at-risk.html or industry-at-risk.html ) has submitted a paper to the US Patent Office, which provides a good overview of the issue, and is suggested reading for those interested in the specific area of software patents. Note that the LPF position is that software patents are bad in general. Unfortunately as they make their case and present the facts it becomes clear, from a pragmatic point of view, that software patents may be critical to the survival of a business in the coming years.

Access is far more valuable to IBM than the fees it receives from its 9,000 active patents.
