STYLE CHECKLIST FOR WEB APPLICATIONS
THE DESIGN OF WEB APPLICATIONS Defining an Information Structure ____ 1 Users traverse no more than four levels in the menu hierarchy to reach content information. ____ 2 Menu pages (including the home page) fit on 24 lines whenever possible but do not exceed two to three screens of information. ____ 3 Content pages contain from one-half to five screens of information but may be longer depending on the information being presented. Supporting Information Navigation ____ 1 Links provide access to other information in the application and to other Web applications, support tools, and helper applications. ____ 2 Links are not used as proxies for standard components provided by a GUI and available in native applications (e.g., pull-down menus). ____ 3 Links are available both in the body of each page and in a navigation bar. ____ 4 At a minimum, the application supports navigation to the page(s) above and below the current one in the information hierarchy, navigation across to siblings and other portions of the application, and navigation to utilities such as search, feedback, and help. ____ 5 Links are bi-directional; there are no dead-end pages with no navigation options. ____ 6 Document pages that can be viewed in sequential order include links that provide at least one linear pathway through the document. ____ 7 The application informs users if the action executed by a link is to launch another instance of the browser and open another browser window. Accessing a Web Application ____ 1 If access controls beyond the normal login procedure are required, the application provides a separate user login or restricts user access based on IP address. ____ 2 The application is represented by its own icon on the desktop; the browser is not used in lieu of the desktop as a repository from which to launch either native or Web applications. ____ 3 To access the application from the desktop, users double click on its icon to launch the browser, open a browser window, and display the home page in the browser preview area. ____ 4 To access the application from within the browser, users type its address in the location box or select it from a list of Bookmarks in the browser window. ____ 5 The URLs for the application have readable names that reflect the nature of the information being presented. ____ 6 The URLs for the application use only lower-case letters and contain no special characters. PAGE DESIGN AND ORGANIZATION Elements of a Web Page Header ____ 1 The header includes the name of the page and a navigation bar. ____ 2 The header can include a graphic banner, other identifying information, security markings if content is classified, and a separator. ____ 3 If a graphic banner is used, it is placed above the text in the header and has a maximum width of 440 pixels. ____ 4 If a graphic banner is used, it is small enough so that users do not have to scroll the page in order to see the rest of its content. Body ____ 1 The body presents the content of the page and is followed by a separator. Footer ____ 1 The footer contains a signature and a navigation bar. ____ 2 The signature identifies the author or owner of the page, that individual's e-mail address, and the date the page was created and/or last modified. ____ 3 The mail address can be a live "mailto" that allows users to send comments to the individual. ____ 4 The footer can provide information on the status of the page content and how often it is updated, security markings if content is classified, and the Web address for the page. Title ____ 1 The page title is descriptive of the page content and does not exceed 64 characters in length. ____ 2 The page title is identical to the page name included on the page; if the page name is lengthy, the title can be shortened in order to fit in the space available. Page Design Guidelines Menu Pages ____ 1 A menu page contains groups of text and/or graphic items that serve as links to other information in the application. ____ 2 A text-based menu page has at least four or five links and may have as many as a dozen links; a menu page with graphics links provides no more than eight choices to the user. ____ 3 If a menu page contains long lists of items, they are sorted and grouped to make browsing easier. ____ 4 Nested lists are used to group
